US Bolsters Military Presence in Middle East

In a significant escalation of tensions with the Islamic Republic of Iran, then-US President Donald Trump announced in May 2019 that a 'massive' fleet of US warships was heading towards the Gulf region. This deployment, spearheaded by the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, was framed by Washington as a deterrent against perceived threats from Tehran.

The core of the deployed forces was the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which included the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), several guided-missile destroyers, and other accompanying warships. The strike group, which had departed Norfolk on April 1, 2019, for a planned global deployment, had its transit to the Middle East expedited. A senior Iranian official, speaking anonymously, indicated that Iran's military was on 'high alert' and prepared for the 'worst-case scenario.'
