Major Gridlock Grips Western Japan Expressway
Heavy snowfall in western Japan on Friday, January 2, 2026, led to a significant traffic disruption on the Sanyo Expressway, resulting in a 23-kilometer (14-mile) traffic jam. An estimated 3,000 vehicles were caught in the gridlock, which stretched between Hiroshima Prefecture and Yamaguchi Prefecture. The incident occurred as many drivers were returning from their New Year holiday travels.
Incident Unfolds Amidst New Year Travel Rush
The extensive traffic jam began around 7:20 p.m. on Friday when a vehicle equipped with normal tires became stuck in the snow on a section of the Sanyo Expressway in Hiroshima Prefecture, according to local police. This initial blockage, coupled with continued heavy snowfall, quickly led to slippery road conditions and subsequent lane closures, exacerbating the congestion. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that heavy snow fell in the area from Friday evening through late night.
Challenging Conditions for Stranded Motorists
Drivers trapped in the prolonged jam faced difficult circumstances. Emergency calls were received from at least four to six vehicles that had become stuck in the same area. One man in his 30s required an ambulance and was transported to a hospital after complaining of 'ringing in the ears, dizziness, and nausea' due to the stress of the situation. Another motorist, a man in his 40s traveling with his family, described the ordeal, stating, 'We are having a hard time because there is no restroom at all. We are just trying to get through with the water we were given at the rest area and a portable toilet.'
Resolution and Reopening of Lanes
The highway operator, West Nippon Expressway, confirmed that the affected lanes on the Sanyo Expressway were eventually reopened by Saturday afternoon. Authorities had been working to ensure the safety of road users, dispatching snow plows and salt spreaders to clear the roads, though the unexpected snowstorm during a busy travel period presented significant challenges.

This is a serious failure in winter preparedness. Unacceptable for a major highway.

Japan usually handles snow so well. This incident feels like a major oversight by authorities.

It's easy to blame, but clearing 23km of snow with 3,000 cars is no small feat. They did their best.

Just glad everyone is safe now. Snowstorms during busy travel times are always tricky.

Kudos to the emergency services working to clear the roads. Nature can be unpredictable.
