China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, addressed a media inquiry concerning China's potential agreement to sign the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ). The question also probed the timing of this decision.
Mao Ning stated that China, as a comprehensive strategic partner and friendly neighbor to ASEAN, has consistently supported the establishment of a nuclear weapon-free zone in Southeast Asia.
According to reports from the Malaysian National News Agency Bernama, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan indicated that China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the SEANWFZ. He also noted that the United States is currently reviewing the treaty before considering signing. Mohamad Hasan believes the involvement of major powers in the treaty would contribute to maintaining Southeast Asia as a region of peace, free from nuclear weapons.
Mao Ning reiterated China's willingness to be among the first to sign the treaty. She also affirmed China's commitment to ongoing communication with ASEAN members regarding the protocol's signing.

I'm hopeful that this treaty will lead to a safer environment for all ASEAN nations. Sign it, China!

This feels like a strategic move to gain more influence over ASEAN nations rather than a genuine commitment to peace.
