Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed recent statements by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Lai Ching-te. Lai had suggested that "global north democratic countries" were eager to attract Taiwanese businesses, advocating for investment to shift away from the Chinese economy and towards the "global north." He also urged Taiwan to capitalize on geopolitical and economic shifts to guide its development.
In response, Zhu stated that the concept of a "global north" was fabricated by the DPP authorities under Lai Ching-te to justify their anti-China stance and decoupling agenda. She argued that the "democratic countries" Lai referenced were actually undermining Taiwan's industries.
Zhu further asserted that the DPP authorities and separatist forces, in their pursuit of "Taiwan independence," were intentionally misleading the public and distorting the investment direction of local enterprises. Their ultimate goal, she claimed, was to sever cross-Straits economic ties, a move that would damage Taiwan's economic autonomy and harm the interests of Taiwanese businesses. Zhu warned that this path was detrimental to Taiwan and destined to fail.
Zhu emphasized that history and reality confirm Taiwan's status as an inalienable part of China. She stated that Taiwan's future lies in national reunification and the well-being of its people in national rejuvenation.
Zhu highlighted that cross-Straits industrial and supply chain cooperation is a result of market-driven resource optimization and the autonomous choices of industries and enterprises on both sides. She argued that this cooperation aligns with economic laws and the fundamental interests of people across the Straits. Zhu concluded that no individual or force could disrupt the framework of cross-Straits economic complementarity, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation, nor could they halt the trend of deepening integration. She added that expanding to and taking root in the mainland remains the best choice for Taiwan businesses.

Supporting cross-Strait cooperation is ultimately supporting Taiwan’s economic sustainability. We should listen to Zhu.

Zhu’s arguments sound more like propaganda than a genuine concern for Taiwanese interests.
