BYD Expands Electrified Portfolio in Argentina with Atto 2 DM-i Launch
BYD, a global leader in new energy vehicles, officially launched its Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV in Argentina on February 19, 2026. This introduction reinforces the company's commitment to the country's burgeoning electrified mobility market, following its recognition as the top-selling brand for pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Argentina during 2025.
The launch event, held in Buenos Aires, saw over 130 guests, including journalists and influencers, witness the unveiling of the new model. Christian Kimelman, Country Manager for BYD Argentina, emphasized that the launch aligns with a clear strategic objective: 'accelerate the adoption of new energies by expanding the reach of our proposal.'
Advanced DM-i Super Hybrid Technology
The Atto 2 DM-i is a compact SUV (B-segment) that integrates BYD's proprietary Dual Mode intelligent (DM-i) Super Hybrid technology. This innovative system prioritizes the electric motor for propulsion, with the 1.5-liter gasoline engine (72 hp, 122 Nm) often functioning as a generator to power the battery. The vehicle's combined power output reaches 212 hp, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 km/h.
Key specifications of the Atto 2 DM-i include:
- Electric-only range (NEDC): Up to 110 km
- Total combined range (NEDC): Up to 1,100 km
- Fuel consumption (NEDC, low battery): 4.3 L/100 km
- Battery: 18 kWh Blade Battery
- Starting Price: USD 31,990
The SUV also features a comprehensive suite of safety and connectivity options, including six airbags, 360° cameras, over 20 ADAS functions, a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, and a panoramic sunroof.
BYD's Strategic Expansion in Argentina
BYD's entry into the Argentine market was officially announced on August 27, 2025, with initial models such as the Yuan UP, Song PRO DM-i, and Seagull. The company views Argentina as a 'pivotal hub' in its regional expansion strategy across South America.
This strategic move is supported by Argentina's government policy, which allows for the duty-free import of up to 50,000 electric and hybrid vehicles by 2026. BYD has also committed to investing in charging infrastructure and fostering collaborations with local energy and automotive stakeholders to enhance the EV ecosystem in the country.
Outlook for Argentina's Electrified Market
While Argentina's electric vehicle market has historically lagged, recent government initiatives and increasing consumer interest are contributing to a turning tide. The introduction of models like the Atto 2 DM-i, which offers a balance of electric and hybrid capabilities, is expected to further accelerate the adoption of new energy vehicles in the country. BYD's continued expansion aims to provide accessible and efficient mobility solutions, contributing to Argentina's transition towards more sustainable transportation.

BYD's investment in Argentina is positive for bringing advanced technology and competition to the market. But we must also ensure that this expansion doesn't stifle the development of domestic automotive innovation and manufacturing in the long run.

Government giving duty-free passes to foreign companies? That's bad for our own auto sector.
