Latest Repatriation Effort Underway
On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Russia and Ukraine carried out another exchange of the remains of fallen soldiers, a humanitarian effort amidst the ongoing conflict. According to Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky, Moscow handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian servicemen to Kyiv. In return, Ukraine repatriated the remains of 35 Russian soldiers to Moscow.
The exchange was confirmed by Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which also acknowledged the involvement of the International Red Cross in facilitating the repatriation initiative.
Ongoing Humanitarian Exchanges
This latest exchange is part of a series of such operations conducted by both nations since the full-scale invasion began more than four years ago. These exchanges are reportedly carried out under the framework of the 2025 Istanbul agreements, which have paved the way for the repatriation of fallen soldiers' bodies.
The current swap follows a previous exchange on January 29, 2026, where Moscow returned 1,000 bodies to Kyiv and received 38 Russian soldiers in return. Both sides have periodically engaged in these humanitarian gestures, often facilitated by international mediators, to return their war dead.
Significance Amidst Conflict
The consistent, albeit intermittent, exchanges of fallen soldiers' remains highlight a rare point of cooperation between the warring nations on humanitarian grounds. While peace talks remain complex and often deadlocked, these repatriations underscore ongoing efforts to address the human cost of the conflict. Ukrainian officials have stated that law enforcement investigators and expert institutions will undertake all necessary measures to identify the repatriated deceased.
