Malta Urges Stronger EU Coordination on Ukraine and Middle East at Foreign Affairs Council

Malta Calls for Unified EU Action on Global Crises

Malta's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, participated in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting held in Brussels on Monday, February 23, 2026. During the council, Borg strongly advocated for stronger EU coordination regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and urged immediate de-escalation in the Middle East. His statements underscored Malta's commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

Reinforcing Support for Ukraine Against Russian Aggression

On the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Minister Borg reaffirmed Malta's unwavering support for Ukraine and stressed the importance of continued diplomatic collaboration between the EU and international partners. He called for a comprehensive and sustainable peace for the Ukrainian people. Borg highlighted the critical need for 'coordinated communication and enhanced international collaboration to protect Ukraine and to safeguard the unity and democratic resilience of the EU,' adding that 'When we work together, the EU carries far greater weight than any single member state acting alone.'

The Maltese Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that diplomatic efforts must be reinforced through increased pressure on Russia, in full respect of international law. He urged the EU to explore further restrictive measures and broaden its engagement with a wider range of stakeholders to weaken Russia's capacity to sustain its aggression. This includes disrupting evasion networks, such as the 'shadow fleet,' without disproportionately impacting member states and their citizens.

Addressing De-escalation and Peace in the Middle East

Turning to the volatile situation in the Middle East, Borg called for immediate de-escalation in the West Bank. He expressed significant concern over recent developments in land administration, which he stated are increasing instability and threatening the prospects of a Two-State Solution.

Regarding the implementation of the peace plan for Gaza, Minister Borg noted that Hamas' insistence on not relinquishing its weapons represents a significant obstacle to advancing reconstruction efforts and scaling up humanitarian assistance. He stressed the importance of prioritizing early recovery and reconstruction efforts to lay the foundations for sustainable peace and long-term security in Gaza, including rebuilding basic infrastructure and essential services.

Supporting a rules-based international order is crucial, but the article doesn't detail how Malta plans to overcome the significant geopolitical obstacles in both Ukraine and the Middle East.

Malta's influence is minimal; this is just political posturing.

While the call for de-escalation in the Middle East is vital, addressing Hamas's role without a broader, comprehensive strategy for Israeli-Palestinian relations seems incomplete.

Blaming Hamas while ignoring other factors in Gaza is a simplistic view of a complex conflict.
