Victoria Stadium Main Stand Demolition Commences for New National Stadium in Gibraltar

Demolition work has commenced on the main stand of Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar, signaling a pivotal stage in the long-anticipated project to construct a new national stadium. This development follows earlier phases of demolition and prepares the site for a modern, UEFA Category 4 compliant facility.

Phased Demolition and Project Timeline

The current demolition of the main stand, which began 'this past week' as of early February 2026, is part of a comprehensive modernization initiative. Prior to this, pre-demolition works, including the clearing of the former Cepsa petrol station site, started around February 2025. The demolition of the east stand of Victoria Stadium officially began on March 5, 2025, a phase that was expected to last approximately six weeks. A 'Sporting Farewell' event was held on June 21, 2025, ahead of full demolition resuming in the autumn of the same year, following a nesting season for swallows.

The journey towards a new national stadium has been extensive. The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) acquired Victoria Stadium from the Government of Gibraltar in April 2017 for £16.5 million, with additional funding from UEFA and FIFA for redevelopment. Initial plans for construction were set between 2019 and 2021, but faced delays due to funding challenges. In September 2023, the GFA announced significant progress in the development and financing of the project.

The Vision for the New National Stadium

The new stadium is designed to be a state-of-the-art UEFA Category 4 venue, enabling Gibraltar to host major UEFA and FIFA matches on home soil. While initially planned for an 8,000-spectator capacity, this was later revised to 4,700 in February 2020, following changes in UEFA regulations that allow for a reduced minimum capacity for smaller nations.

Beyond its primary function as a football stadium, the complex is envisioned as a multi-purpose hub. It will incorporate:

  • Modern sports facilities
  • Retail and commercial spaces
  • Office and residential units
  • Venues for music concerts and other cultural events

The project is being financed by a consortium of Gibraltar banks, with the sale of the residential and commercial elements intended to cover the stadium's construction costs. The Gibraltar Savings Bank is also noted as a sponsor and investor. Stadium Development Limited, a subsidiary of the GFA, is acting as the developer.

Overcoming Challenges and Controversies

The redevelopment has not been without its obstacles. Early proposals for new stadiums at Europa Point and Lathbury Barracks were abandoned due to public opposition. More recently, the project faced a legal challenge from Allan Asquez, owner of the Murga Bar, a long-standing establishment within the Victoria Stadium complex. Asquez's attempts to block the demolition were rejected by the Development and Planning Commission (DPC), and a constitutional challenge by his company, VSB Limited, was dismissed by the Supreme Court in September 2025. The government maintained that Mr. Asquez's compensation demands were 'wholly unreasonable and unjustifiable'. Concerns have also been raised by some residents regarding potential increases in traffic and environmental impacts during the construction phase.

A New Era for Gibraltarian Sport

Despite the challenges, the GFA, led by General Secretary Ivan Robba, views the project as a significant step forward. GFA President Michael Llamas has expressed enthusiasm for the completion of the facility, stating that it will allow Gibraltar to 'finally host major UEFA and FIFA matches in a top-tier, compliant, UEFA Category 4 stadium, right here at home in Gibraltar.' The new national stadium is seen as a 'legacy project' that will redefine Gibraltar's footballing future and enhance its sporting infrastructure for decades to come.

It's good that Gibraltar will finally have a UEFA compliant stadium, but the constant delays and legal battles have certainly cast a shadow over the project's management. Hopefully, the final result justifies the long wait.

Reduced capacity and still costing a fortune. Is it really worth it?

The multi-purpose vision is ambitious, aiming to make it more than just a football venue, yet the reduction in spectator capacity from initial plans does make one wonder about the long-term vision for hosting truly large events. It's a mixed bag of potential and compromise.

While the idea of a modern stadium is exciting for our national team, I'm genuinely concerned about the increased traffic and environmental impact on the surrounding residential areas. We need proper infrastructure planning alongside this development.
