Leaders Convene in Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping held official talks with Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The meeting marked President Orsi's first state visit to China since assuming office in March 2025, and he arrived in the Chinese capital on Sunday, February 1, 2026, for a visit scheduled to last until February 7.
During their discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between their nations, a relationship that was elevated to this status in November 2023. President Xi Jinping highlighted the need for China and Uruguay to work together to advance an 'equal and orderly multipolar world'.
Deepening Bilateral Cooperation
Following their talks, President Xi and President Orsi jointly attended a signing ceremony for a series of cooperation documents. More than 10 agreements were signed, encompassing various fields such as investment, trade, and other areas of mutual interest.
Discussions focused on aligning development strategies and deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. Key areas identified for enhanced collaboration include:
- Economy and trade
- Finance
- Agriculture and animal husbandry
- Infrastructure construction
- Information and communications technology
Furthermore, the leaders explored potential cooperation in emerging fields, including green development, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and clean energy, aiming to drive economic growth and transformation in both countries.
Strategic Partnership and Trade Relations
China has maintained its position as Uruguay's largest trading partner for over a decade, also serving as the primary market for Uruguayan commodities. Bilateral trade between the two nations reached $6.59 billion in 2024. Major Chinese purchases from Uruguay include beef, soybeans, and pulp, while China exports electronic products, such as electric vehicles, which have contributed to Uruguay's efforts to reduce energy imports.
President Xi also expressed China's support for Uruguay in its role as rotating president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), signaling a commitment to fostering a China-Latin America and Caribbean community with a shared future.

Increased trade with China certainly offers economic benefits for Uruguay, but it's vital for them to ensure economic diversification to avoid over-dependence on a single partner.

While strengthening ties with a major global power like China can bring significant investment, Uruguay needs to ensure these partnerships are mutually beneficial and don't compromise its long-term strategic autonomy.
