PM Modi Renames Adampur Airport to Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji Airport, Inaugurates Halwara Civil Terminal in Punjab

Adampur Airport Renamed in Honor of Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially renamed Adampur Airport as 'Shri Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji Airport, Adampur' on February 1, 2026. The renaming took place during his visit to Punjab and coincided with the 649th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji, a revered 15th-century saint and social reformer. This move fulfills a long-standing demand from various political parties and communities in Punjab.

Guru Ravidass Maharaj Ji is celebrated for his profound teachings on equality, compassion, and human dignity, which continue to inspire India's social ethos. His devotional verses are notably included in the Guru Granth Sahib, and he is recognized as the central figure of the Ravidassia religious movement. The Adampur Airport, a dual-use domestic airport and Indian Air Force base serving Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur in Punjab, underwent a revamp costing ₹125 crore under the UDAN 5.0 scheme.

Halwara Airport Civil Terminal Inaugurated to Enhance Connectivity

On the same day, Prime Minister Modi virtually inaugurated the new civil terminal building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana district. This significant infrastructure project, developed at the Indian Air Force base in Halwara, aims to establish a new gateway for Punjab, catering to Ludhiana and its surrounding industrial and agricultural regions.

The civil terminal, constructed at an approximate cost of ₹54 crore, is designed to handle 300 passengers at any given time, with a capacity of 150 for arrivals and 150 for departures. A key feature of the new facility is its longer runway, capable of accommodating A320-type aircraft, a substantial upgrade from the smaller runway of the previous Sahnewal Airport in Ludhiana. The terminal also incorporates several green and energy-efficient features, including:

  • LED lighting
  • Insulated roofing
  • Rainwater harvesting systems
  • Sewage and water treatment plants
  • Use of recycled water for landscaping

Boost for Punjab's Aviation Infrastructure

The inauguration of the Halwara civil terminal addresses a long-standing demand from the business and industrial community in Ludhiana, a major industrial hub. The project is expected to significantly improve regional air connectivity and spur economic growth in the area.

Dignitaries present at the inauguration included Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Chief Minister Mann reiterated his proposal to name the Halwara International Airport after the legendary freedom fighter Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha.

The cost of these projects seems exorbitant. Is this really the best use of taxpayer money?

The new Halwara terminal boasts impressive green features, which is commendable. Yet, we must also consider the overall environmental impact of increased air travel and ensure sustainable practices beyond just the building itself.

Improved air connectivity for Ludhiana is certainly a positive step for economic growth. However, ensuring that the benefits reach small businesses and not just large corporations will be crucial for true regional development.
