US Approves Major Arms Sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia Amidst Regional Tensions

U.S. State Department Announces Major Arms Deals

The Trump administration has given its approval for substantial new arms sales to key Middle Eastern allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The U.S. State Department announced late on Friday, January 30, 2026, that the sales amount to $6.67 billion for Israel and $9 billion for Saudi Arabia. These approvals were made public after Congress was notified earlier the same day.

Details of the Sales Packages

The arms package for Israel, valued at $6.67 billion, is divided into four distinct components. The largest portion, approximately $3.8 billion, is allocated for 30 Apache attack helicopters, which will be equipped with rocket launchers and advanced targeting gear. Additionally, Israel will receive 3,250 light tactical vehicles at a cost of $1.98 billion, intended to enhance troop and equipment mobility for the Israel Defense Forces. Further investments include $740 million for power packs to upgrade armored personnel carriers that have been in service since 2008, and $150 million for light utility helicopters to complement existing fleets. The State Department stated that these sales are intended to 'enhance Israel's capability to meet current and future threats by improving its ability to defend Israel's borders, vital infrastructure, and population centers.'

For Saudi Arabia, the approved sale totals $9 billion and primarily includes 730 Patriot missiles and associated defense systems. U.S. officials emphasized that this deal aims to 'support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a Major non-NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region.' The department further noted that this enhanced capability 'will protect land forces of Saudi Arabia, the United States, and local allies and will significantly improve Saudi Arabia's contribution' to the integrated air and missile defense system in the region.

Context of Regional Tensions and Peace Efforts

These significant arms sales come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the possibility of U.S. military strikes in Iran. The announcements also coincide with President Donald Trump's ongoing efforts to advance a ceasefire plan for Gaza, aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas conflict and facilitating the reconstruction and redevelopment of the Palestinian territory following two years of conflict. The U.S. government has maintained that these new arms sales will not disrupt the military balance in the region.

It's understandable that Israel wants to upgrade its defenses, especially given regional threats. However, the scale of these sales could be seen as provoking neighboring states and undermine efforts for a lasting ceasefire.

Good. These sales bolster defense capabilities against real threats in the region.

These sales might offer short-term security for allies, which is a legitimate concern for the US. However, relying solely on military solutions rarely brings true peace and can easily lead to unintended consequences in such a volatile area.

While allies certainly need to defend themselves, sending such a massive arms package during peace talks seems counterproductive. It risks escalating tensions rather than calming them.

Saudi Arabia's human rights record is appalling. We shouldn't be arming them at all.
