Homeless Man Charged with Murder in Deadly Bronx Gas Explosion

Fatal Explosion Rocks Bronx High-Rise

A deadly gas explosion and subsequent four-alarm fire at the Boston Secor Houses, a 17-story NYCHA complex located at 3475 Bivona Street in the Eastchester section of the Bronx, has led to murder charges against Samuel Calderon, 55. The incident, which occurred just after midnight on Saturday, January 24, 2026, resulted in the death of Ronald McCallister, 60, and left 15 others injured.

Police and fire marshals allege that Calderon, described as homeless, caused the explosion by disconnecting a stove in an apartment, leading to a significant gas leak. Prosecutors stated that Calderon's alleged motive was to steal the stove to sell it for drug money. In a criminal court complaint, Calderon reportedly admitted, 'I went there to steal her stove and sell it for a gram of crack. I smelled the gas and heard the hissing sound of gas so I taped a blanket around the hole and left.'

Charges and Investigation Details

Samuel Calderon was arrested on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, and faces a comprehensive list of charges. These include:

  • Two counts of murder
  • Manslaughter
  • Two counts of assault
  • Burglary
  • Petit larceny
  • Criminal contempt
  • Harassment

Authorities also revealed that Calderon allegedly violated an existing order of protection held by his ex-girlfriend, a former resident of the building, by entering the premises. His ex-girlfriend was reportedly staying at a violence shelter at the time of the inferno.

Casualties and Displacement

The explosion and fire had devastating consequences for the residents of the high-rise. Ronald McCallister, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, a 37-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive and transported to a local hospital in critical condition. In total, at least 13 to 15 other individuals sustained injuries, including one firefighter.

The structural damage caused by the blast, which impacted the 15th and 16th floors and severely damaged multiple apartments, led to the displacement of over 175 residents. The building was reportedly undergoing renovations at the time of the incident.

This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, especially the family of Ronald McCallister and the displaced residents. While the man's actions were clearly dangerous and wrong, it's also a stark reminder of the complex challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and addiction.

Where was the security in these NYCHA buildings if someone can just walk in and dismantle a stove?

Murder charges are entirely appropriate. He knew the gas was leaking and left it.

Justice for Ronald McCallister! This man deserves the harshest penalty for his recklessness.

While the focus is understandably on the criminal act and seeking justice for the victims, this situation also brings to light the lack of adequate housing and support for individuals struggling with addiction. Both aspects need attention.
