Widespread Destruction Follows Overnight Tornadoes in Antalya

Multiple powerful tornadoes and severe storms swept across Turkey's Antalya Province overnight on January 26, 2026, leaving a trail of significant damage to agricultural areas and infrastructure. The extreme weather event has also intensified the impact of recent flooding in the region, prompting a large-scale emergency response. While no fatalities have been reported, injuries have occurred, and extensive material losses are being assessed across several districts.

Agricultural Sector Bears Brunt of Storms

The agricultural heartland of Antalya Province suffered substantial losses, with damage to greenhouses estimated to include at least 202 hectares. In the Kumluca district, a key greenhouse farming region, nearly 100 hectares of greenhouses were severely impacted by a tornado that moved inland from the sea. Additionally, in Manavgat, approximately 300 decares (equivalent to 30 hectares) of farmland, primarily olive groves, were destroyed. The storms, accompanied by heavy rain and hail, flattened agricultural facilities, damaged crops, and disrupted the livelihoods of many farmers.

Infrastructure and Property Sustain Extensive Damage

Beyond agriculture, the tornadoes and severe winds inflicted widespread damage on infrastructure and private property. In districts such as Kumluca, Finike, Aksu, and Manavgat, rooftops were ripped off, solar panels were destroyed, and energy transmission lines were brought down, leading to widespread power outages. The Aksu river area saw particularly dramatic scenes, with a tornado lifting boats onto the shore and smashing others, while riverside structures and piers were reduced to debris. Throughout the province, roofs collapsed, windows shattered, and solar water heaters were damaged. In Kepez, a hall roof collapsed, narrowly avoiding injuries during football preparations.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Recovery Efforts

In response to the widespread devastation, emergency teams have mobilized across Antalya. The Antalya Municipality deployed 714 personnel with 374 vehicles, including firefighters and water management units, to address the crisis. Rescue teams, supported by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, successfully evacuated 100 people who were stranded by floods and responded to 95 incidents across the city. While no deaths have been confirmed, Governor Hulusi Şahin reported 'injuries caused by overturned containers' in the Aksu district. Damage assessment efforts are currently underway in affected areas, including Kumluca, Finike, and Aksu, as authorities work to restore essential services and support affected communities. The severe weather event follows a period of heavy rainfall, with Dösemealtı and Konyaaltı districts receiving 68.8 millimeters of rain within 24 hours, contributing to the extensive flooding.
