Gibraltar Health Authority Inaugurates Robotic-Assisted Surgery Program at St Bernard's Hospital

Historic Launch for Gibraltar's Healthcare

The Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) officially commenced its robotic-assisted surgery program at St Bernard's Hospital on January 27, 2026. This significant development is poised to transform surgical care in Gibraltar, introducing advanced treatment options previously accessible primarily in major international medical centers.

The launch was announced by the Minister for Health and Care, Gemma Arias Vasquez, who described it as a 'major milestone' in the evolution of local surgical care. The GHA's Acting Director General, Lysandra Debono, expressed immense pride in the new capabilities, stating that the introduction of robotic surgery signifies 'the beginning of the future of the GHA'.

Collaborative Effort and Advanced Technology

The implementation of this state-of-the-art program is the result of a collaborative effort. The GHA partnered with international medical technology developer MicroPort, alongside charity partners Kusuma Trust and Prostate Cancer Gibraltar. Generous donations from these charities funded the advanced surgical robotic system and associated equipment, including the establishment of the purpose-built Kusuma Robotic Surgery Suite.

The robotic system is designed to facilitate both conventional robotic procedures and future tele-surgery capabilities, with the latter to be activated in a later phase. This technology enhances a surgeon's ability to control instruments with increased precision and flexibility, offering superior control through enhanced visualization, high-resolution magnification, and articulated 'robotic wrists'.

Immediate Impact and Future Expansion

Even prior to the official launch, GHA surgical teams had already performed the first local robotic surgery cases in General Surgery. The program is set for further expansion throughout 2026, with plans to extend its use to more complex procedures in:

  • Urology
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Upper Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Gynaecology

A comprehensive, phased training pathway has been developed with international partners to ensure the safe and high-quality implementation of this cutting-edge surgical technology.

Benefits for Patients and Healthcare System

Robotic-assisted surgery is expected to bring numerous benefits to patients in Gibraltar. These include the potential for smaller incisions, reduced damage to surrounding tissue, less postoperative pain, and a faster return to daily activities. The GHA emphasizes that this program positions Gibraltar 'at the forefront of modern surgical care', aligning with an investment in its people, facilities, and the highest standards of clinical practice.

Charity funded? What happens when those funds run out? Unsustainable.

While the introduction of robotic surgery is an exciting step forward for specialized cases, we must ensure it doesn't overshadow the need for robust investment in general practice and emergency services.
