Zona Maco 2026 Kicks Off in Mexico City, Anchoring Latin America's Premier Art Week

Mexico City Embraces Global Art Scene with Zona Maco 2026

Mexico City is once again at the epicenter of the Latin American art world as Zona Maco 2026, the region's largest art fair, officially begins. The 22nd edition of this influential event is scheduled to run from February 4 to 8, 2026, transforming the Centro Citibanamex into a vibrant hub for contemporary art, design, and culture.

As the anchor of Mexico City's broader Art Week, Zona Maco draws an international audience of collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts, solidifying the city's reputation as a dynamic cultural destination.

A Diverse Showcase of International and Regional Talent

This year's Zona Maco brings together an impressive array of participants, featuring 200 galleries from 27 countries across Latin America, Europe, and beyond. The fair is complemented by the participation of more than 65 museums, galleries, and independent spaces throughout Mexico City, extending the artistic celebration across the metropolis.

Founded by Zélika García in 2002, Zona Maco has grown significantly, evolving from its origins to become a major international platform. The fair's artistic direction is overseen by Direlia Lazo, ensuring a balance between market gravity and cultural ambition.

Multiple Sections Offer Comprehensive Artistic Exploration

Zona Maco 2026 is structured into several distinct sections, each catering to different facets of the art and design world:

  • Zona Maco Arte Contemporáneo: The main section, dedicated to contemporary art, showcases works from internationally renowned galleries, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and new technologies.
  • Zona Maco Diseño: Established in 2011, this section highlights contemporary design, featuring limited-edition and unique pieces such as furniture, jewelry, textiles, and decorative objects.
  • Salón del Anticuario: Created in 2014, this segment offers a portal to the past, presenting heritage-rich pieces and antiques.
  • Zona Maco Foto: Since 2015, this section has been a platform for contemporary photography, exploring both visual innovation and documentary heritage.
  • EJES: Dedicated to emerging talent from Mexico and the wider region, curated by Buenos Aires-based Aimé Iglesias Lukin.
  • Zona Maco Forma: A new initiative for this edition, positioned at the intersection of contemporary art and design.

The fair's comprehensive program also includes a Conversation Program led by international experts, delving into critical global art topics, and a range of parallel activities across the city.

Economic and Cultural Significance

The commencement of Zona Maco 2026 not only marks a significant moment for the global art calendar but also provides a substantial economic boost to Mexico City. The influx of international visitors benefits local hotels, restaurants, and various businesses, underscoring the event's broad impact beyond the art market.

Having dedicated sections for design, photography, and even antiques makes for a comprehensive event, though one might wonder if it dilutes the primary focus on contemporary fine art.

Overpriced tickets and commercial focus. It's more about sales than genuine artistic expression.

Just another exclusive event for the super-rich. Real art is for everyone, not just collectors.

While Zona Maco undeniably puts Mexico City on the global art map, I sometimes worry it overshadows smaller, independent galleries that struggle for visibility and funding.
