Arrest in Muktsar District
Shamsher Singh and Preetpal Kaur, the parents of notorious foreign-based gangster Goldy Brar, were arrested on Monday, January 26, 2026, in Punjab. The arrests were made in connection with a 2024 extortion case registered in the state's Muktsar district. According to Muktsar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana, the couple was taken into custody following investigations related to an FIR filed last year. While the family originally hails from Faridkot district, they own a house in Adesh Nagar in Muktsar.
Details of the Extortion Case
The extortion case stems from a complaint filed by a resident of Udekaran village in Muktsar in 2024. The FIR, dated December 3, 2024, alleges that the complainant received a WhatsApp call on November 27, 2024, from a foreign mobile number. The caller, identifying as a member of the Bambiha Group, reportedly demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh and issued death threats. The arrests of Brar's parents are a significant development in the ongoing efforts by Punjab Police to dismantle organized crime networks.
Goldy Brar's Criminal Background
Goldy Brar, whose real name is Satinderjeet Singh, is a prominent figure in the criminal underworld and is a key accused in the high-profile 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Brar publicly claimed responsibility for Moosewala's killing. He is believed to be currently residing in the United States, having initially moved to Canada on a student visa in 2017. In 2024, the Union government designated Brar as a terrorist under anti-terror laws, citing his alleged involvement in smuggling high-grade arms, ammunition, and explosives into India using drones from across the border for targeted killings. Investigators indicate that Brar was previously a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang but reportedly split from the outfit last year and is now associated with the Brar–Rohit Godara–Kala Jatheri gang.
Wider Crackdown on Organized Crime
The arrests of Brar's parents are part of an intensified crackdown by the Punjab Police against gangsters operating from overseas. As part of this extensive drive, police have identified and mapped locations linked to approximately 1,200 associates of nearly 60 foreign-based gangsters, along with about 600 of their family members, who are allegedly connected to criminal activities in the state. Goldy Brar's father, Shamsher Singh, is a former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in the Punjab Police who took premature retirement in 2021 after his alleged involvement surfaced in a murder case in Muktsar district.

Excellent move. Targeting the family's assets and support network is crucial to dismantle these gangs.

It's good that authorities are taking strong action against extortion and criminal networks, which plague society. Yet, the focus should remain on dismantling the actual gangs and capturing the masterminds, rather than solely on their relatives unless they are proven accomplices.

This is just for show. The real criminals are still operating freely from abroad.

Typical police tactic: if you can't get the big fish, harass their family. Very unfair.

The involvement of Goldy Brar's father, a former ASI, in a previous murder case is highly disturbing and suggests deeper corruption. However, the current arrests of both parents must be based on solid evidence related to this specific extortion case, not just their familial ties.
