Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Maltese Islands
The Civil Protection Department (CPD) in Malta has issued a yellow weather warning for Monday, January 26, as strong winds are anticipated to affect the Maltese Islands. The advisory, released on Sunday, January 25, indicates that wind speeds are expected to reach Force 7 on the Beaufort scale, with higher gusts possible.
Weather conditions are projected to intensify from the early hours of Monday, specifically between 1 am and 4 am, with winds strengthening throughout the night and into the daytime. Alongside the strong winds, authorities have warned of rough sea conditions, particularly in open and coastal areas, and periods of light rainfall.
Impact and Public Safety Directives
A Force 7 wind, categorized as a 'Near Gale', typically involves wind speeds ranging from 28 to 33 knots (approximately 50-61 km/h or 32-38 mph). On land, such conditions can cause whole trees to be in motion and make walking against the wind inconvenient. At sea, the conditions are characterized by large waves and white foam from breaking waves being blown in streaks.
The CPD has urged the public to take several precautions:
- Exercise increased caution, especially during the morning and daytime hours.
- Secure any loose or outdoor objects to prevent potential damage or injury.
- Remain vigilant and alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
- Adhere to all official instructions and advisories issued by the authorities.
- In the event of an emergency, contact the authorities by calling 112.
Warnings for Construction and Marine Activities
In response to the impending weather, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) have also issued warnings. They have advised caution for all outdoor work, particularly at construction sites and near coastal areas. Construction operators are specifically urged to secure loose materials, scaffolding, cranes, and temporary structures. Furthermore, work at heights or near unstable structures should be avoided.
The Civil Protection Department has confirmed that it remains on standby and is continuously monitoring the situation in close coordination with other emergency services. Further updates will be provided should conditions change.

While it's important to issue warnings for public safety, especially regarding construction, we must ensure these alerts don't become so frequent they lose their impact. People might start ignoring them if they feel every strong gust triggers a 'warning'.

Yellow warning for Force 7? Bit much, isn't it?

Another day, another warning. Are we supposed to panic every time?
