Oakville Declares Significant Weather Event Amidst Powerful Snowstorm

Town of Oakville Responds to Major Winter Storm

The Town of Oakville officially declared a Significant Weather Event starting at 12 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in anticipation of and response to a powerful snowstorm that swept across the region. This declaration, which remains in effect until further notice, allows municipal crews greater flexibility in managing winter maintenance operations due to the expected heavy snow accumulation.

Storm Details and Forecasted Impacts

The severe weather event was prompted by a winter storm warning issued by Environment Canada for the Greater Toronto Area, including Oakville. Forecasters predicted snowfall amounts ranging from 20 to 40 centimetres, with some localized areas potentially receiving more due to lake-enhanced snow. Additionally, gusting winds of up to 50 km/h were expected, leading to reduced visibility and challenging conditions. Some parts of the GTA were even projected to see up to 60 cm of snow.

Disruptions to Local Services and Facilities

The declaration led to immediate impacts on various town services and facilities. All recreation and culture facilities in Oakville closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and were scheduled to reopen at noon on Monday, January 26. Consequently, all drop-in and registered programs scheduled for 1 p.m. or later on Sunday, January 25, were cancelled. Furthermore, rentals, drop-in, and registered programs for the morning of Monday, January 26, through to noon, were also cancelled, alongside all PA Day programming for the full day on Monday.

Regarding winter maintenance, the Significant Weather Event declaration suspends the town's standard timelines for snow clearing, enabling crews to prioritize their response efforts. Residents were advised to exercise patience as crews worked to clear roads and sidewalks. The town also cautioned that parked vehicles on roads could impede snow removal, and those obstructing operations might face ticketing.

Transportation and School Closures

The severe weather significantly affected transportation. Oakville Transit anticipated possible delays starting January 25, 2026, and same-day bookings for its care-A-van service were not accepted on that day. Additionally, GO train service between Oakville and Mimico stations was suspended over the weekend due to planned construction, with GO buses providing alternative transport from Oakville and Clarkson stations.

Across the broader region, the storm also led to widespread school closures. Both the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), which serve Oakville, announced the closure of all schools and workplaces for Monday, January 26, with transportation services also cancelled. Residents were strongly urged to monitor weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel, driving with extreme caution and maintaining a safe distance from snowplows and clearing equipment.

Thank you to all the municipal crews who will be working tirelessly to keep us safe and clear the roads!

While the declaration gives crews flexibility, I hope it doesn't mean residential streets are completely forgotten while main roads get all the attention. Every resident deserves safe access, eventually, not just a promise of patience.

Another overreaction. It's winter in Canada, we should be prepared for snow without shutting everything down.
