Historic Air Link Established at FITUR 2026
Air Europa has confirmed plans to establish a new direct flight route connecting Guanajuato, Mexico, with Madrid, Spain. This significant development, announced during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) 2026 in Madrid, will provide Guanajuato with its first direct air connection to the European continent. The agreement was formalized on January 22, 2026, following discussions between Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo and Air Europa CEO Richard Clark.
Details of the New Route
The new service will link Bajío International Airport (BJX), located near León and Silao in Guanajuato, to Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). While the exact start date, flight frequencies, and operating days are still undergoing technical studies and are yet to be defined, the airline and Guanajuato officials aim for the flights to commence operations within 2026. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance international connectivity for the Mexican state.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Governor García emphasized that the direct flight is anticipated to bolster European tourism to Guanajuato and generate substantial economic benefits across various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, and local services. The new route is seen as a strategic move to position Guanajuato as a key destination within the global tourism and business network.
FITUR 2026: A Platform for Global Tourism
The announcement was a highlight of FITUR 2026, held from January 21 to 25 at IFEMA MADRID, where Mexico holds the distinction of being the Partner Country. Air Europa, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, utilized the prominent international tourism fair to unveil its expansion plans, further solidifying its strategic position in connecting Europe and America.

The economic benefits for the region are undeniable with a direct flight, however, we must also consider the potential for cultural dilution and ensure sustainable tourism practices are prioritized.

While increased tourism could boost the local economy, I hope there are robust plans in place to manage the influx and protect Guanajuato's unique heritage and infrastructure.
