Sundance Film Festival Commences Final Season in Utah Before 2027 Boulder Relocation

Sundance Bids Farewell to Utah After Decades-Long Run

The Sundance Film Festival is currently underway in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, for what will be its final season in the state. Running from January 22 to February 1, 2026, this edition marks a significant transition for the renowned independent film festival, which is slated to move to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027.

The festival, founded by Robert Redford in 1978, has called Utah home for over four decades, evolving into the largest independent film festival in the United States.

Reasons Behind the Relocation

The decision to relocate stems from a combination of factors, with the Sundance Institute citing affordability and accessibility as primary drivers. The festival's contract with Park City is set to expire after the 2026 event.

Officials have noted the high cost of operating in Park City, which has made it increasingly challenging for independent filmmakers and attendees. The festival was also considered to have outgrown the small resort town, leading to concerns about traffic and infrastructure.

While Sundance officials emphasized logistical and financial considerations, the political climate in Utah, including legislative proposals perceived as unwelcoming, was also a contributing factor in the institute's decision-making process.

Boulder, Colorado: The New Home

Boulder, Colorado, was officially named the new host city following a comprehensive selection process. The city was chosen for its 'vibrant community of artists, enthusiastic audiences, and breathtaking Rocky Mountains,' which align with the festival's ethos. Colorado's bid included a substantial financial incentive, with lawmakers approving a bill offering $34 million in tax credits over 10 years to secure the festival.

Ebs Burnough, Sundance Institute Board Chair, stated that Boulder is the 'ideal location' for the festival's future and 'natural evolution.' Amanda Kelso, Sundance Institute Acting CEO, described Boulder as 'an art town, tech town, mountain town, and college town,' offering an environment where the festival can 'build and flourish.'

A Look at the Final Utah Festival

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival features a diverse program, including over 90 feature films and more than 50 short films. Notably, nearly 40% of the directors showcasing feature-length films are making their debut, underscoring Sundance's commitment to emerging voices. Screenings are being held in-person across various venues in Park City and Salt Lake City, with select films also available for online viewing.

This year's festival also includes a special tribute to its late founder, Robert Redford, who passed away earlier in the year. Festival Director Eugene Hernandez has invited audiences to experience this final Utah season and then join the festival in its new Colorado home in 2027.

The relocation makes sense from a logistical and financial perspective, especially given the challenges in Park City, yet the mention of Utah's political climate as a factor is concerning. It highlights how cultural events can be impacted by local politics.

Utah built this festival from the ground up, and now they're abandoning it. This feels like a betrayal.

The 'political climate' is just an excuse. This is all about the money and tax credits, plain and simple.

Boulder's vibrant arts scene and college town vibe are a natural fit. This will be an exciting new chapter for independent film.
