Newcastle Disease Detected in Latvian Backyard Poultry Flock, Prompting Culling and Control Measures

Outbreak Confirmed in Talsi Municipality

The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service announced on Thursday, November 27, 2025, the detection of a highly contagious bird infection, Newcastle disease, in a backyard poultry flock located in the Talsi municipality, western Latvia. The affected flock consisted of 35 chickens. This incident represents the first reported case of Newcastle disease in domestic birds within Latvia, although laboratory tests have previously indicated the virus's circulation among wild bird populations.

Immediate Response and Control Measures

In response to the outbreak, authorities have initiated stringent control measures to prevent further spread of the disease. All birds and eggs at the affected holding will be destroyed. Additionally, protection and monitoring zones have been established within a three- to ten-kilometer radius around the infected premises. Within these designated zones, the transportation of live poultry and poultry products is strictly prohibited.

Understanding Newcastle Disease

Newcastle disease is a severe, highly contagious viral disease that affects various bird species, including domestic poultry. Symptoms can vary but often include:

  • Respiratory signs such as gasping, coughing, and sneezing
  • Nervous signs like tremors, twisted necks (torticollis), and paralysis
  • Digestive issues, including diarrhea
  • A significant drop or complete cessation of egg production
The disease can lead to high mortality rates in affected flocks. While highly pathogenic to birds, Newcastle disease is generally not considered a food safety or public health concern for humans.

Vaccination and Biosecurity

To mitigate the risk of future outbreaks, vaccination is a critical preventative measure. The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service mandates vaccination for all registered poultry farms involved in food production. For backyard flocks, vaccination is strongly recommended, though not compulsory. Strict biosecurity protocols, including restricting traffic, maintaining facility fencing, and ensuring proper disinfection, are also crucial in preventing the spread of the disease.
