Annual Rankings Released
U.S. News & World Report, a prominent authority in education rankings, officially released its 2026 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. This comprehensive evaluation assessed thousands of public schools across the United States, offering a detailed look at educational performance at the foundational levels.
Methodology Behind the Scores
The 2026 rankings are meticulously compiled using publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education. The core of the methodology focuses on student performance in state assessments for mathematics and reading/language arts, specifically identifying students who are proficient or above proficient. Beyond test scores, the evaluation also considers student background and achievement in core subjects. To resolve ties in overall scores, student-teacher ratios are factored into the calculations. Additionally, half of the overall score is adjusted to account for socioeconomic factors. The test scores utilized for these rankings include data from the 2022-23 school year for reading and the 2021-22 school year for mathematics in some instances.
Scope and Purpose of the Evaluation
This year's report encompasses a vast number of institutions, evaluating approximately 47,000 public elementary schools and more than 23,000 middle schools across the nation. The rankings are presented at both state and district levels, with a distinct category for charter schools within state rankings. For a district to receive recognition, at least two of its top-performing schools must rank within the top 75% of the overall elementary or middle school rankings.
LaMont Jones, Ed.D., managing editor for Education at U.S. News, emphasized the objective of these rankings, stating that they 'highlight institutions that excel in fostering student achievement and providing exceptional learning environments for all.' He further noted that 'These rankings offer communities and families valuable insights into schools dedicated to preparing students for future success.'
Insights for Families and Communities
The release of these rankings provides parents and caregivers with a comprehensive tool to assess school performance and make informed decisions regarding their children's education. By focusing on key academic indicators and student demographics, U.S. News & World Report aims to support communities in identifying and celebrating schools that demonstrate a commitment to high-quality learning environments.

Ignores so much good work in schools. Too narrow a focus.

Outdated data, flawed methodology. Don't trust these lists.

This just fuels competition and stress, not actual learning.

While these rankings offer valuable data for parents, they often overemphasize standardized test scores. A holistic view of a school's environment is equally important.

The inclusion of socioeconomic factors is a step in the right direction, yet the fundamental reliance on state assessments still limits the scope. True excellence involves more than just academic proficiency.
