SASSA Social Grants to See R10 Increase from October 1, 2025

SASSA Confirms Grant Increase for October 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially announced a R10 increase in various social grant amounts, set to take effect from October 1, 2025. This adjustment is in line with the 2025/26 budget speech delivered by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana earlier this year, which outlined a two-part increase strategy for social grants.

The increment is intended to provide additional financial relief to millions of South Africans who rely on these grants as a primary source of income, helping to cushion them against rising living costs.

Affected Grant Categories and New Amounts

The R10 increase will apply to several key social grant categories. Beneficiaries of these grants will see the updated amounts automatically reflected in their payments, with no need for reapplication. The grants receiving the increase include:

  • Old Age Grants: For beneficiaries aged 60-74, the grant will increase from R2,310 to R2,320. For those aged 75 and older, it will rise from R2,330 to R2,340.
  • Disability Grants: These will increase from R2,310 to R2,320.
  • War Veterans Grants: Beneficiaries will receive an increase from R2,330 to R2,340.
  • Care Dependency Grants: These grants will also see an increase from R2,310 to R2,320.

It has been confirmed that the Grant in Aid and Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants will not be affected by this specific R10 increase.

Official Statements and Payment Schedule

Themba Matlou, CEO of SASSA, welcomed the increase, emphasizing its importance in supporting vulnerable members of society. Matlou stated, 'This reaffirms the government's commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in society, easing financial burden and cushioning them against economic hardships.' He also assured beneficiaries that the October payment cycle would proceed without interruption.

The payment dates for October 2025 have been confirmed as follows:

  • Old Age Grants: Payments will be made on October 2, 2025.
  • Disability Grants: Payments will be made on October 3, 2025.
  • Children's Grants: Payments will be made on October 6, 2025.

This R10 adjustment follows a more substantial increase implemented on April 1, 2025, as part of the same budget framework, indicating a phased approach to social grant adjustments throughout the 2025/26 financial year.

The fact that there was a larger increase in April is good, but this R10 adjustment still feels minimal. It shows a phased approach, yet the impact on daily struggles will be negligible for most.

This won't even cover a loaf of bread. Pathetic attempt at 'relief'.

SASSA delivering on its promise. Much-needed relief for our elders.

Good to see the government remembering its most vulnerable citizens.

While any increase is technically welcome, R10 is barely symbolic given the current cost of living. It highlights the vast gap between what's needed and what's provided.
