Cholera Outbreak Re-Declared in Moma District, Nampula Province, Mozambique

Outbreak Reactivated in Moma District

Mozambican authorities have officially re-declared a cholera outbreak in the Moma district of Nampula province, in the country's north. The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 25, 2025, following the recording of 36 new cases over a three-week period, specifically between September 3 and 21.

Jaime Miguel, head of the public health department at the Provincial Health Directorate, confirmed the reactivation of the outbreak. He stated, 'We had declared the outbreak over in Moma, but we began to record some cases in one area, specifically in Metil. We instructed our colleagues to conduct testing… Of four tests, three were confirmed, and we requested the outbreak to be reactivated. All patients are currently receiving treatment.'

Current Case Status and Broader Provincial Impact

Of the 36 cases identified in Moma district, 34 patients have already been discharged from local health units, while the remaining two individuals are still hospitalized. Crucially, no deaths have been reported in this new wave of cholera within the district.

This re-declaration comes amidst a wider cholera situation in Nampula province. The current outbreak in the province initially began in October 2024 in the Mogovolas district. As of September 13, 2025, the province has registered a cumulative total of 3,603 infections and 40 deaths due to cholera.

National Response and Ongoing Challenges

The Mozambican government has set an ambitious goal to eliminate cholera as a public health problem nationwide by 2030, backing this objective with a strategic plan valued at 409 million euros.

Efforts to combat the disease have included extensive vaccination campaigns. In May 2025, more than 1.7 million people in Nampula province received cholera vaccinations, achieving 99% of the initial target.

However, the response has faced significant challenges. Reports from other districts in Nampula province indicate that misinformation has led to attacks on health workers and the destruction of health facilities, hindering effective intervention. Beyond Nampula, the cholera outbreak is also considered active in Muanza, Sofala province.

40 deaths in the province is a tragedy. The situation is far from under control.

While the vaccination efforts are impressive, the re-emergence highlights how misinformation can undermine even the best public health initiatives. Community engagement needs to be stronger.
