Deadly Drone Attack in Foros
A Ukrainian drone attack struck the resort town of Foros on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula on the evening of September 21, 2025. Russian officials reported that the strike resulted in three fatalities and sixteen injuries. The incident primarily affected the Foros Sanatorium and a nearby village school, causing significant damage.
Details of the Assault
The attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. Moscow time (16:30 GMT). According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the assault was carried out using 'drones armed with high-explosive warheads'. Russian air defense systems reportedly intercepted 22 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones during the period of the attack, with three downed over Crimea and sixteen over the Black Sea. Eyewitness accounts suggested that between six and eight drones flew over the village of Foros. The damage included 'several facilities' at the resort, with the village school's assembly hall completely destroyed and its facade and library severely damaged. Debris from downed drones also caused a grass fire near the city of Yalta.
Target Significance and Official Reactions
The targeted Foros Sanatorium is a luxury resort reportedly linked to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). It is also situated in close proximity to four Russian state dachas, with two reportedly used by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reports from various Telegram channels, including 'Crimean Wind' and 'Astra', indicated that 'very important guests' were staying at the sanatorium at the time of the strike, and the resort's restaurant was closed for 'special service' on the day of the attack. Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed head of Crimea, condemned the incident as a 'terrorist strike' on a civilian area. The Russian Defense Ministry echoed this sentiment, stating there were 'no military targets whatsoever' in the resort area. Major General Vladimir Popov of Russia vowed that the Ukrainian units responsible for the attack would be 'identified and destroyed'. Ukrainian officials have not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack.
Casualty Report
Initial reports from the Russian Defense Ministry indicated two fatalities and fifteen injuries. However, Sergey Aksyonov later updated the casualty figures to three killed and sixteen injured. Of those injured, thirteen people were admitted to the Yalta center, with twelve requiring hospitalization. Among the hospitalized, four were in serious condition and seven in moderate condition. Foreign citizens, including those from Belarus, were reportedly among the casualties at the Foros sanatorium.

This escalation only hurts regular people.

Russia claims this was a terrorist attack on a civilian area, which is a strong condemnation. However, given the resort's alleged connections to the FSB and Putin's dachas, Ukraine likely views it as a legitimate military target within occupied territory.

This incident shows the complex nature of modern warfare, where targets can have dual uses. While Ukraine may see the FSB link as justification, the tragic civilian deaths will undoubtedly be used by Russia for propaganda purposes.

FSB resort? Sounds like a legitimate target to me.

While striking a resort linked to the FSB could be seen as strategic, the reported civilian fatalities are deeply concerning and raise ethical questions about targeting.
