Trump Administration Requests Security Funding Increase After Aide's Assassination

The Trump administration has requested an additional $58 million from Congress to enhance security measures for the executive and judicial branches. This request follows the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a leadership aide, as confirmed by sources. The administration also supports increased security for members of Congress, but has deferred to the legislative branch on the specifics of implementation.

This funding request is being considered amidst ongoing negotiations for a stopgap funding bill. Lawmakers have already taken steps to bolster their personal security, including shifting events indoors or canceling them altogether, in response to the killing of Kirk in Utah and a general increase in political violence.

The assassination of Kirk is the latest in a series of violent incidents. These include the killing of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, the wounding of her Democratic colleague and spouse, an arson attack on Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence, and two assassination attempts against President Donald Trump last summer.

House Democrats are scheduled to hold a virtual briefing with the House sergeant at arms and the Capitol Police chief to discuss member security. The invitation to this briefing has also been extended to members' spouses or significant others.

Lawmakers have expressed support for the proposed funding increase, emphasizing the need to address the rise in political violence. Senator Chris Coons highlighted the importance of securing public life, citing the tragic events in Utah and Minnesota as examples of incidents that fuel anger and are further amplified online. Senator James Lankford echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the funding is crucial not only for personal safety but also for preserving civil discourse within the nation.

This is just another way to funnel money to the security state. We need transparency and accountability, not more protection for elites.

It's a small price to pay for the safety of our leaders. Political violence is absolutely unacceptable!

$58 million? That's outrageous! Where's the money for actual solutions to the violence, like addressing the root causes?

Where's the investigation into why these attacks are happening? More security is a band-aid, not a solution.

Absolutely ludicrous. This only makes the problem worse. More security will create only more separation without solving the underlying problem.

How about they stop inciting hate and division first? Security won't help if they're still lighting the match.
