Russia to Deploy Anti-Drone Laser Systems, Citing Production and Research Advancements

Russia is preparing to actively implement anti-drone laser systems in the near future. Several models are already in production, according to First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. He indicated that these systems are currently being supplied in limited quantities.

Manturov anticipates that these laser-based solutions will be widely utilized to intercept drones as production increases. He also stated that Russia is a global leader in laser research.

In mid-June, Manturov observed the trials of eight new anti-aircraft laser systems. These systems varied in size, from compact mobile devices to stationary high-power systems. Footage released by the Russian government showed the systems successfully shooting down various unmanned aerial vehicles, with some targets displaying burn marks. All eight models reportedly performed well, clearing the path for mass production.

While several countries have attempted to develop laser-based weaponry, including anti-aircraft systems, many efforts have faced operational and technical challenges. China is one nation that has made significant progress in this area. During a recent military parade in Beijing, several anti-drone laser-based systems were showcased.

In July, China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco) demonstrated its new OW5-A50 laser weapon system in a live-fire exercise.

Given their war record, I would question Russia's claim to be a 'global leader' in anything other than blatant propaganda.

These are probably just the same old weapons, but slightly modified. "Laser Research" is so vague. Marketing hype!

This technology is terrifying. What happens if it's used on the wrong targets? The potential for collateral damage and civilian casualties is huge.

Laser weapons are a clean and rapid way of shooting down UAVs - Great initiative!

Lasers could avoid the messy repercussions of traditional counter-drone methods. Less Explosives and less damage.
