The Orgy Dome, a designated space for consensual sexual activity at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert, is exactly what the name suggests. Housed in a tent-like structure, the space is described on its website as a "sex-positive, consensual space for couples and moresomes to play."
The space is accessible to anyone who arrives with a consenting partner or partners. Last year, approximately 5,000 people visited the dome. The environment includes mattresses and is air-conditioned.
Maintaining an erotic atmosphere involves long queues, consent forms, and hand sanitizer. Former participants also recommend gloves due to the pervasive desert sand.
Unfortunately, the Orgy Dome was destroyed by high winds just as the festival began. The build team had worked hard to erect the structure, but the winds undid their labor.
The destruction of the Orgy Dome is just one of the issues at this year's festival. Dust storms also swept through the site, damaging camps and installations and injuring several people. This adds to a history of festival disasters, including the Fyre Festival and past issues at Glastonbury and Burning Man itself.
Organizers are hoping to arrange some workshops, although the dome itself is unlikely to be rebuilt this year.

The destruction of the Orgy Dome was a sign that this kind of thing shouldn't have a place at Burning Man.

Promoting a sex-positive space at a festival is irresponsible. It contributes to an unhealthy culture.

Why can't people just enjoy the festival without needing sex to be a central theme? It's frustrating.

Despite the challenges, the community spirit around the Orgy Dome is inspiring—everyone deserves a place to be themselves.

The idea of consent doesn't mean it’s a good idea to have a space like this in a festival known for its chaos.

I love that Burning Man embraces all forms of expression, including sexual freedom. We need more of this in the world!
