Sweden Edges Latvia in Thrilling Quarterfinal Showdown
David Edstrom's power-play goal in the second period proved to be the difference as Sweden edged Latvia 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal matchup at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Zeb Forsfjall and Anton Wahlberg also found the back of the net for Sweden, who jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead early in the second period.
However, Latvia refused to go down without a fight. Eriks Mateiko scored two quick goals to bring his team within one heading into the final frame. Despite a valiant effort, Latvia couldn't find the equalizer, and Sweden held on for the hard-fought victory.
This win keeps Sweden's quest for their first World Junior title since 2012 alive. They topped Group B with a perfect 4-0 record in the preliminary round and will now face a tough test in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Germany avoided relegation with a dramatic comeback victory over Kazakhstan. Trailing 3-1, Germany rallied to score three unanswered goals and secure a 4-3 win. Julius Sumpf netted the game-winner, while Maxim Schafer and Edwin Tropmann each contributed a goal and an assist. This victory ensures Germany's participation in the 2026 World Junior Championship, while Kazakhstan will be relegated to the Division I Group A tournament.
