Singapore and Malawi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, to establish a carbon credit framework under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This initiative will allow Singaporean companies to offset up to 5% of their taxable emissions using high-integrity carbon credits generated from climate projects in Malawi, fostering bilateral climate cooperation and sustainable development.
Malawi has been approved for a US$25 million grant from the Pandemic Fund to bolster its pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response capabilities. The funding, part of the Fund's 3rd Call for Proposals, will support a One Health Approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
Malawi's President-elect Peter Mutharika has vowed to unite the nation and prioritize national rebuilding following his victory in the September 16, 2025 presidential election. Mutharika, representing the Democratic Progressive Party, secured 56.8% of the vote, defeating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera.
