Applications Open for DiscoverEU Travel Passes for 18-Year-Olds in Iceland

Opportunity for Young Travelers in Iceland

The European Commission has officially opened the latest application round for DiscoverEU, an initiative under the Erasmus+ program. Young residents of Iceland who are 18 years old are invited to apply for the chance to receive a free travel pass to explore Europe. This program aims to provide young people with the opportunity to experience the continent's diversity, learn about its cultural heritage, and connect with peers from across Europe.

Program Details and Eligibility

The DiscoverEU initiative is designed to encourage sustainable travel, primarily by rail. Selected participants will receive a travel pass that allows them to travel across Europe for a period ranging from one day to 30 days. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific criteria set by the European Commission:

  • Must be 18 years old on the date specified in the application round.
  • Must be a legal resident of an Erasmus+ program country, including Iceland.
  • Must complete the application process via the European Youth Portal.

Successful applicants are selected through a lottery system, and those chosen will be able to plan their own itineraries or follow suggested routes provided by the program.

Promoting European Integration

Since its inception, DiscoverEU has sought to bridge the gap between young people and the European Union. By facilitating travel, the program encourages participants to develop independence, improve language skills, and gain a broader understanding of European identity. Officials emphasize that the initiative is a key component of the European Year of Youth legacy, continuing to prioritize youth mobility and cross-border cooperation.

How to Apply

Interested individuals in Iceland can submit their applications through the official European Youth Portal. The application process includes a short quiz related to the European Union. Applicants are encouraged to review the official guidelines and deadlines carefully to ensure their submission is valid. The program covers the cost of the travel pass, while participants are generally responsible for their own accommodation, food, and other travel-related expenses.
