Commemorating the Semiquincentennial
The United States Department of the Treasury has officially announced that the signature of President Donald Trump will appear on select U.S. paper currency. This special issuance is designed to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary, also known as the semiquincentennial, which will be celebrated in 2026.
Design and Implementation
The inclusion of a sitting president's signature on currency is a rare occurrence, typically reserved for the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States. According to Treasury officials, this commemorative design will be integrated into the production process to mark the historic milestone. Key aspects of the initiative include:
- The signature will be featured on specific denominations of paper currency.
- The design is intended to honor the historical significance of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
- The Bureau of Engraving and Printing will oversee the production of these commemorative notes.
Historical Context
Throughout American history, the appearance of signatures on currency has evolved. While the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States are the standard signatories, special commemorative issues have occasionally been authorized by Congress or the Treasury Department to mark significant national events. A Treasury spokesperson stated, 'This initiative serves as a tangible way to recognize the 250th year of our nation's founding and the leadership presiding during this landmark period.'
Availability and Circulation
The Treasury has indicated that these notes will enter general circulation, allowing the public to encounter them in everyday transactions. Collectors and the general public are expected to take interest in the notes as they become available. Further details regarding the specific denominations and the timeline for the release of these notes are expected to be provided by the U.S. Treasury in the coming months.

While marking the 250th anniversary is a wonderful idea, placing a president's signature on currency feels like a departure from tradition. I worry that this could lead to more partisan changes in the future.

Currency should represent the nation, not the ego of a sitting politician.

Celebrating 250 years is a huge accomplishment for our country. While I support the celebration, I am not entirely convinced that a signature is the best way to represent the spirit of the Declaration of Independence.
