Austria's Avalanche Death Toll Reaches 26 This Winter Season, Exceeding Recent Averages

Rising Avalanche Fatalities Mark Challenging Winter in Austria

Austria has experienced a significant increase in avalanche fatalities this winter season, with the death toll reaching 26 as of February 25, 2026. This figure notably surpasses the country's 10-year average of 16 avalanche deaths per year and the 20-year average of 18 fatalities. The current season's numbers also exceed the highest annual total of 23 deaths recorded in Austria over the past decade.

Critical Period Sees Doubling of Deaths

A particularly tragic period occurred between February 15 and 21, 2026, during which 12 people lost their lives in avalanche incidents, effectively doubling the season's death count from 12 to 24 within a single week. During this critical timeframe, the state of Tyrol was most severely affected, accounting for nine of these fatalities. Additionally, two deaths were reported in Vorarlberg and one in Styria. Of the 24 confirmed deaths prior to a recent update, 15 victims were engaged in freeride skiing, 10 in ski touring, and one in hiking. The victims included 12 Austrian nationals and 14 foreign tourists.

Contributing Factors and Official Warnings

The surge in avalanche activity has been attributed to a combination of meteorological factors. Intense snowfall, with accumulations of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in some areas, coupled with strong winds and a weak underlying snowpack, created highly unstable conditions. Avalanche danger levels were consequently raised to '5 – very high' (red level) in large parts of Tyrol, Salzburg, Vorarlberg, and sections of Carinthia around February 21. Large regions of Tyrol and Vorarlberg were at Danger Level 4 (High), indicating that avalanches could be triggered very easily and large natural avalanches were expected. Authorities, including the Austrian Board of Trustees for Alpine Safety (ÖKAS), have highlighted that these 'avalanche times' are recurring phenomena where specific snowpack and weather patterns dramatically increase risk. Despite 'clear and repeated warnings,' numerous incidents occurred. Disturbingly, one-third of the 24 deceased victims documented before the recent update were not carrying an avalanche transceiver, which significantly reduces the chances of rapid recovery if buried.

Call for Extreme Caution

Officials and safety organizations have repeatedly urged winter sports enthusiasts to exercise extreme caution. The U.S. Embassy Vienna advised monitoring local avalanche forecasts, utilizing resources like the 'Lawine Tirol' app, and carrying essential safety equipment such as an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel when in mountainous terrain. Skiers and snowboarders are strongly advised to remain on marked and open trails and to avoid off-piste and backcountry activities during periods of high avalanche danger.
