Kalashnikov Introduces New Loitering Munition
The Kalashnikov Concern, a prominent Russian arms manufacturer, has officially released details of its new Kub-10ME tactical loitering munition. This advanced strike drone boasts an operational range exceeding 100 kilometers (62 miles), marking a significant development in Russia's unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities. The company stated that the system was developed in 'record time,' drawing on experience gained from the active deployment of guided munitions in conflict zones.
Advanced Capabilities and Specifications
A key feature of the Kub-10ME is its sophisticated electro-optical guidance system, which enables it to engage moving targets. This guidance method also provides enhanced resilience against electronic warfare (EW) systems and air defense measures, as it reduces reliance on satellite navigation systems like GPS, which can be susceptible to jamming. The munition is equipped with onboard photo and video recording capabilities, allowing for data capture during its mission.
Operational specifications for the Kub-10ME include a cruising speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) and an operational altitude range between 80 and 1800 meters (260–5900 ft). It is designed to operate effectively day or night and in diverse weather conditions, including wind gusts up to 10 m/s (22 mph) and temperatures ranging from –30°C to +40°C. As a single-use 'kamikaze' drone, it is likely to carry a blast fragmentation warhead.
Strategic Role and Intended Use
The Kub-10ME is classified as a tactical-level weapon, intended for precision strikes against a variety of ground targets. Its design reflects lessons learned from combat, particularly in Ukraine, where loitering munitions have played an increasingly prominent role. Kalashnikov has positioned the Kub-10ME as the first Russian system of its class to achieve a range exceeding 100 kilometers.
The drone is designed to target:
- Unarmored and lightly armored vehicles
- Armored personnel carriers
- Air defense systems
- Command posts
- Electronic warfare systems
- UAV launch sites
- Signals intelligence (SIGINT) sites
- Aircraft and helicopters outside protected shelters
This new munition extends the tactical reach of Russian forces, entering a domain previously served by medium-range tactical strike systems or reusable armed reconnaissance UAVs.

Kalashnikov's rapid development highlights the intense pace of military innovation driven by current conflicts. Still, focusing solely on advanced weaponry without addressing the root causes of conflict is a dangerous path for global security.
