Huawei Achieves Strong 2025 Revenue Amid Sanctions
Huawei Technologies, the China-based telecommunications and technology giant, has reported a robust financial performance for 2025, with revenue exceeding 880 billion yuan (approximately US$127 billion). This figure represents the company's second-highest annual revenue on record, showcasing its continued resilience despite persistent US sanctions. The announcement was made by Huawei Chairman Liang Hua at the 2026 Guangdong High-Quality Development Conference.
The 2025 revenue marks a modest year-on-year increase of approximately 2.2% to 2.3% from 2024's figures. Huawei's highest-ever revenue was recorded in 2020, reaching 891.4 billion yuan (approximately US$124.7 billion), just before the full impact of US restrictions on its smartphone and international operations.
Resilience and Strategic Adaptation
Despite the ongoing US sanctions, which have severely limited Huawei's access to advanced semiconductors and global markets since 2019, the company has maintained stable operations. Chairman Liang Hua emphasized that Huawei continues 'to provide globally competitive products and services.' The company's strategy has involved a significant pivot towards domestic innovation, focusing on its proprietary HarmonyOS operating system and Ascend chips, alongside expanding its enterprise solutions.
Smartphone Comeback and Ecosystem Growth
A key driver of Huawei's strong performance in 2025 was the significant recovery of its smartphone business within mainland China. The company reclaimed the top position in the domestic smartphone market, securing a 16.4% to 17% share and narrowly surpassing Apple. This achievement marks the first time Huawei has led the Chinese smartphone market for a full year since 2020, when US sanctions impacted its access to Google's Android ecosystem and advanced chip manufacturing.
The success in the smartphone segment is largely attributed to the growing adoption of HarmonyOS. Reports indicate that devices running HarmonyOS 5 and the newly released HarmonyOS 6 now exceed 40 million units, supported by a rapidly expanding ecosystem of over 75,000 compatible applications and services.
Investment in AI and Future Growth
Huawei is also heavily investing in new growth engines, particularly in AI computing and smart vehicles. The company plans to continue increasing its research and development (R&D) investment to meet the surging demand for computing power, aiming to build an AI ecosystem centered on its Ascend chips. In the first half of 2025 alone, Huawei's R&D expenditure surged by 9.04% year-on-year, reaching 96.95 billion yuan. While overall revenue saw growth, net profit for the first half of 2025 experienced a 32% year-on-year decrease, a trend attributed to these substantial R&D investments and intense market competition.

HarmonyOS is still no Android or iOS globally. A walled garden.
