A significant investigation is currently unfolding in Rome, focusing on allegations of systematic theft at a Coin department store located within the bustling Termini central rail station. The inquiry has implicated 21 active-duty law enforcement officers, including members of the Carabinieri and Polizia di Stato (specifically Polfer, the railway police), among a total of 44 individuals under scrutiny. The alleged thefts, which reportedly occurred between September and December 2024, involved the coordinated efforts of some store staff and uniformed officers.

Modus Operandi and Financial Impact

The alleged scheme involved a sophisticated method to pilfer goods, primarily luxury clothing, cosmetics, and perfumes. Investigators suggest that a cashier at the Coin store played a central role, reportedly removing anti-theft tags from pre-selected items and preparing them for removal. The officers, in turn, are accused of using their positions to facilitate the illicit removal of these items, often through fictitious or significantly undervalued transactions.

The scandal came to light following an internal audit in February 2024, which revealed a substantial inventory shortfall of approximately €184,000. This figure represented 10.8% of the store's turnover, a rate considerably higher than the typical 2-3% shrinkage observed in similar retail environments. The discovery prompted the installation of additional security cameras and the involvement of a private investigative agency, whose findings helped uncover over 90 individual incidents of theft.

High-Ranking Officers Among Suspects

The breadth of the investigation is notable, as it includes law enforcement personnel across various ranks. Among those under scrutiny are:
