Aid Arrives in Gaza
The 144th convoy of humanitarian aid trucks commenced its entry into the Gaza Strip for Palestinians on Monday, February 23, 2026. The convoy utilized the secondary gate of the Rafah Border Crossing, proceeding towards the Karem Abu Salem and Al-Awja crossings for delivery into the enclave. This latest delivery is a continuation of the 'Zad Al-Ezza… From Egypt to Gaza' initiative, spearheaded by the Egyptian Red Crescent, aimed at alleviating the severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
Contents and Logistics of the Convoy
The extensive shipment included a wide array of critical supplies. Among the provisions were over 180,000 food baskets, 570 tonnes of flour, and more than 870 tonnes of medicines, relief materials, and personal care items. Additionally, the convoy transported over 1,575 tonnes of fuel and essential winter supplies, such as warm clothing, blankets, mattresses, and tents, to assist families facing harsh weather conditions. A reliable source indicated that the trucks departed from outside Rafah Port and underwent inspection by Israeli authorities at Karem Abu Salem before being permitted to enter the Strip.
Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis
The entry of this convoy underscores the persistent and urgent humanitarian needs within the Gaza Strip. The region continues to grapple with a severe crisis, characterized by acute shortages of food, medical supplies, and adequate shelter. The Rafah Border Crossing has been a crucial conduit for aid, and its limited reopening for the movement of people in early February 2026, as part of a ceasefire agreement, has also facilitated medical evacuations and the return of some Palestinians. Aid agencies have consistently highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian situation, with reports indicating widespread food insecurity and a struggling healthcare system.
International Efforts and Challenges
Since October 2023, Egypt has played a significant role as a primary lifeline for Gaza, delivering over 800,000 tons of humanitarian aid, which accounts for approximately 70 percent of all aid sent to the Strip. Despite these efforts, the distribution of aid within Gaza has faced challenges, including security concerns and the effectiveness of various distribution mechanisms. Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, continue their efforts to secure comprehensive ceasefire agreements and facilitate the exchange of prisoners and detainees, which are often linked to the broader humanitarian access.
