Historic Verona Arena Hosts Olympic Finale
The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics drew to a close on Sunday, February 22, 2026, with a spectacular closing ceremony held in the historic Verona Arena in Verona, Italy. This marked the first time an Olympic ceremony was staged within a historic World Heritage monument, transforming the nearly 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater into a grand stage for the event.
A Celebration of Art and Sporting Achievement
The 2.5-hour ceremony, titled 'Beauty in Action,' was a vibrant tribute to Italian art, music, and the athletic achievements of the Games. Conceived by Filmmaster, the grand finale wove together music, art, and the spirit of sport, celebrating unity and the enduring bonds between athletes and nations. Highlights included performances by internationally acclaimed ballet dancer Roberto Bolle, popular Italian singer Achille Lauro, and DJ Gabry Ponte, showcasing both classic and contemporary Italian music and dance.
Athletes Parade and Olympic Flag Handover
Approximately 1,500 Olympians participated in the ceremony, parading into the ancient monument. A significant moment of the evening was the lowering of the Olympic flag and the official handover to the next Winter Games host nation, the French Alps 2030, symbolizing the passing of the Olympic baton. For the first time in Winter Olympics history, the two Olympic flames, lit during the opening ceremony, were extinguished simultaneously in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. A light show was utilized instead of fireworks to protect animals in the area.
A Legacy of Inspiration and Unity
The ceremony, overseen by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, reflected the inclusive spirit of the Games, which embraced a wide and diverse territory across northern Italy. It served as a culmination of an experience that connected countless places and communities, leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration and unity.
