French Army Seeks Interim Long-Range Firepower
The French Army is actively evaluating the acquisition of South Korea's K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). This move is intended to serve as a temporary solution to enhance France's long-range strike capabilities, addressing a critical gap until its indigenous Frappe Longue Portée – Terrestre (FLP-T) system is ready for deployment, which is not anticipated before 2030.
Currently, France operates a limited number of M270 Lance-Roquettes Unitaire (LRU) launchers, which are considered outdated and require extensive maintenance. With only 9 to 13 systems remaining, some of which have been transferred to Ukraine, these launchers are no longer deemed suitable for the demands of modern high-intensity warfare and are expected to reach the end of their service life by 2027.
K239 Chunmoo: A Modern Alternative
The K239 Chunmoo, manufactured by Hanwha Aerospace, is a self-propelled MLRS capable of firing various guided and unguided rockets and missiles. Its versatility includes 239mm guided rockets with an approximate range of 80 kilometers and 600mm ballistic missiles that can reach up to 290 kilometers. The system is mounted on an 8x8 wheeled chassis, offering enhanced mobility and simplified logistics compared to the tracked M270 systems.
The Chunmoo has already seen adoption in several European nations, including Poland, Norway, and Estonia, with Poland also initiating domestic ammunition production for the system. A recent study by the French think tank IFRI recommended the K239 Chunmoo as a preferred option, citing its modern design, wide range of munitions, and relatively short delivery timelines.
France's Long-Term Vision and Other Considerations
Despite the consideration of foreign systems, France's long-term strategy, outlined in the 2024–2030 Military Programming Law (LPM), prioritizes the development of a sovereign long-range strike capability through the FLP-T program. This program aims for an initial range exceeding 150 kilometers by 2030, with a planned increase to 500–1,000 kilometers. Two consortiums, Safran/MBDA and Thales/ArianeGroup, are currently working on this project, with a selection expected in 2026.
In its search for an interim solution, France has also explored other international options, including the U.S.-made M142 HIMARS, Israel's PULS system, and India's Pinaka MLRS. However, French parliamentarians have expressed concerns about purchasing HIMARS, labeling it 'geopolitically risky and politically incomprehensible' due to perceived American inconsistency as a partner. The emphasis remains on maintaining operational readiness while advancing towards strategic autonomy in defense matters.

Avoiding US geopolitical strings is wise. South Korea is a reliable and less complicated partner.

Finally, some pragmatism. No time to wait for a perfect domestic solution when threats are immediate.

While an interim solution is clearly needed given the M270's age, France must ensure this doesn't slow down the crucial FLP-T development. Strategic autonomy should remain the ultimate priority.

Why buy new when existing systems could be upgraded, or domestic development prioritized more aggressively?

It's understandable to seek immediate firepower, and Chunmoo seems capable. Yet, the long-term cost of acquiring and integrating an interim system, only to replace it a few years later, warrants careful financial scrutiny.
