Murena and Volla Systeme Unveil Privacy-Centric Tablet
Murena, a company known for its privacy-focused mobile devices, has officially partnered with German hardware manufacturer Volla Systeme to launch the Murena Volla Tablet. This new device aims to provide consumers with a 'de-Googled' Android experience, prioritizing user privacy and data protection. The tablet is available for €698 in Europe and other international markets.
Hardware and Software Specifications
The Murena Volla Tablet is engineered with a focus on performance and security. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 SoC and comes equipped with a substantial 12 GB of RAM. For storage, the device offers 512 GB internally, which can be expanded further up to 1 TB using a microSD card.
Key hardware features include:
- Display: A 12.6-inch QHD screen with 240 pixels per inch (ppi)
- Battery: A robust 10,000 mAh non-removable battery
- Cameras: A 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera
- Connectivity: Support for WiFi 6 and 4G cellular networks
On the software front, the tablet runs on /e/OS, Murena's open-source operating system based on Android 14. This system is designed to remove Google services and replace them with open-source alternatives, ensuring that user data is not tracked or monetized. It includes tracker-free native applications for mail, calendar, maps, and camera. The App Lounge allows users to install Android applications from F-Droid, the Play Store, and Murena's own database, providing a privacy score for each app based on its permissions and trackers.
Partnership and Availability
Murena has been offering de-Googled Android smartphones since 2022, with a mission to provide devices that do not profit from user data. Volla Systeme, founded in 2017 by Dr. Jörg Wurzer, is a German hardware manufacturer recognized for its repairable and privacy-focused devices. This collaboration combines Volla's hardware expertise with Murena's privacy-centric software.
The Murena Volla Tablet is currently available for purchase in various regions, including Europe, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.

Battery is huge, but performance with that chip at that price point is questionable.

While the Murena Volla Tablet offers an impressive array of privacy features and an open-source OS, which is a huge plus, the market for Android tablets is highly competitive. Its success will depend on how well it balances privacy with everyday usability and value for money.

It's great to see an effort towards de-Googled devices with robust hardware like 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. Still, the challenge will be convincing users to switch from the familiar Google ecosystem, especially regarding app availability and support.
