Overnight Strikes Hit Ukrainian Cities

Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine during the night of February 8-9, 2026, primarily targeting the cities of Odesa and Kyiv. The assaults led to at least one fatality and two injuries in Odesa, along with considerable damage to residential areas and critical infrastructure.

Odesa Endures Massive Drone Barrage

The southern port city of Odesa was subjected to a massive drone strike, reportedly involving Iranian-made drones. Ukrainian officials confirmed that a 35-year-old man was killed and two people were injured, including a 19-year-old woman, as a result of the overnight assault.

The attacks caused significant destruction to residential infrastructure. Damage reported includes:

• A multi-story residential building was hit, igniting a fire on its roof.
• A gas pipeline was damaged.
• Passenger cars were set ablaze.
• Facades and windows in several buildings were damaged.
• At least 21 apartments in Odesa's Prymorskyi district sustained damage.

Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, described the city as 'massively attacked,' while Sergiy Lysak, head of the Odesa City Military Administration, confirmed the casualties and damage.

Kyiv Faces Ballistic Missile Threat

Earlier in the night, Russian forces also targeted Kyiv in what Ukrainian officials described as an apparent ballistic missile attack. Explosions were heard in the capital, and Mayor Vitalii Klitschko confirmed that air defense systems were activated to intercept the incoming missiles. Residents were urged to remain in shelters.

While no immediate information on specific targets struck or casualties in Kyiv was available, power outages were reported in at least one district following the attack. Ukraine's Air Force indicated that Russia launched 11 ballistic missiles and 149 drones against Ukraine overnight, with 116 drones and some missiles being shot down or neutralized.

These latest strikes are part of Russia's ongoing missile and drone campaign against Ukraine, which has frequently targeted the country's energy infrastructure.
