Strategic Partnership to Electrify Japanese Skies
Tokyo-based AirX Holdings has formalized a binding order for up to 50 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Eve Air Mobility, a significant move poised to accelerate the development of urban air mobility (UAM) in Japan. The agreement was announced on February 4, 2026, during the Singapore Airshow.
The deal underscores a growing global interest in sustainable and efficient air transportation solutions, with Japan identified as a key market for advanced air mobility.
Order Details and Deployment Plans
The comprehensive order includes an initial firm purchase of two eVTOL aircraft, complemented by options for an additional 48 aircraft, bringing the total potential acquisition to 50 units. The estimated value of the full order could reach $150 million, based on an estimated list price of $3 million per aircraft. The first two aircraft are slated for delivery in 2029.
AirX Holdings, a company founded in 2015 and known for its existing helicopter charter and sightseeing services through platforms like AIROS Skyview and AIROS Charter, plans to integrate Eve's eVTOLs into its operations. These electric aircraft are intended for use on sightseeing routes and for last-mile missions in major Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, with a particular focus on the Osaka Bay area. AirX CEO Kiwamu Tezuka stated that the company intends to lease these eVTOLs to partner operators.
Eve Air Mobility's Advanced eVTOL Technology
Eve Air Mobility, an Embraer spin-out and a leader in next-generation eVTOL solutions, is developing an aircraft designed for a pilot and up to four passengers, with the flexibility to accommodate up to six passengers in a future autonomous configuration. The eVTOL features a 'lift + cruise' design, incorporating eight rotors for vertical take-off and landing and a dedicated pusher propeller for forward flight. It boasts a targeted range of up to 60 miles (100 km) and a cruising speed of up to 125 mph (201 km/h).
The company anticipates commencing serial production in 2026 and aims for type certification by the end of 2025. Eve Air Mobility CEO Johann Bordais highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, 'Our first agreement in Asia-Pacific, achieved in partnership with AirX in Japan, is more than a milestone; it launches a new era that will redefine urban mobility.'
Pioneering Sustainable Air Travel in Japan
This collaboration represents a crucial step in AirX Holdings' commitment to sustainability and innovation, positioning the company at the forefront of Japan's evolving air mobility market. The introduction of these zero-emission aircraft is expected to provide efficient and environmentally responsible transportation alternatives, contributing to a cleaner and smarter future for urban and regional travel in Japan.

This could revolutionize last-mile transport for some, but it seems primarily focused on tourism and high-end charter. I wonder how accessible it will truly be for the average citizen.
