Brazil Receives 93 Deported Nationals from United States Under 'Aqui é Brasil' Program

Repatriation Flight Arrives in Belo Horizonte

On January 30, 2026, a charter flight carrying 93 Brazilian nationals deported from the United States landed at Belo Horizonte/Confins Airport. The reception was led by Brazil's Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC) as part of the government's 'Aqui é Brasil' repatriation program. This latest operation underscores Brazil's ongoing commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to its citizens returning from abroad.

The 'Aqui é Brasil' Repatriation Program

The 'Aqui é Brasil' program, initially launched in 2019, aims to ensure a humanized, safe, and dignified return for Brazilian citizens facing vulnerability and human rights risks upon deportation or repatriation. A significant operational phase of the program was launched in August 2025 to provide dignified, inter-agency assistance. Since its inception, the program has facilitated 39 operations, assisting more than 3,200 returnees.

Upon arrival, the repatriated individuals receive extensive support from a joint task force involving federal and state officials, alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Services provided include:

  • Provision of food and hygiene kits.
  • Medical screening and psychosocial support.
  • Assistance with onward transportation to their home states.
  • Help in replacing lost identity documents.
  • Temporary accommodation in dedicated hotel facilities.
  • Guidance on accessing public services related to health, social assistance, and employment.

The program is coordinated by the MDHC in collaboration with other ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Justice & Public Security, Health, and Social Development, as well as the Federal Police and ANTT.

Context of Deportations and Demographics

The increase in deportations of Brazilians from the United States is attributed to factors such as Washington's stricter public-charge rules and a backlog of asylum cases, leading to the removal of individuals who overstayed their visas or entered irregularly. Brazil's government has elevated repatriation to a cabinet-level priority, emphasizing its commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and ensuring 'dignified, rights-based' reintegration.

Among the 93 Brazilians who arrived on January 30, 83 were unaccompanied men and 9 were unaccompanied women. One passenger was identified as being wanted by Brazilian justice authorities. The largest demographic group among the returnees, accounting for 31%, was individuals aged between 18 and 29 years, highlighting the prevalence of labor-migration profiles among those repatriated.

Brazil's Continued Commitment

The 'Aqui é Brasil' program continues to be a vital initiative for the Brazilian government, providing a structured and humanitarian response to the challenges faced by its citizens returning from forced removals. The comprehensive support system aims to facilitate their reintegration into Brazilian society, reflecting the country's dedication to the human rights of its nationals.

It's good that the government is providing assistance to its citizens, but this program also highlights the significant challenges many Brazilians face abroad and upon return. Long-term integration strategies are key.

Fantastic initiative! Brazil is showing true commitment to its people, no matter the circumstances.

Instead of a repatriation program, maybe focus on preventing irregular migration to begin with?

This is just a PR stunt. What about the reasons these people left in the first place?

It's great to see Brazil stepping up to help its citizens. This is what a responsible government does.
