Investigation Targets Antwerp Port
The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), operating from its Brussels office, has announced a significant investigation into suspected customs fraud, corruption, and the forgery of documents at the Port of Antwerp, Belgium. The probe, code-named 'Operation Steamboat,' led to a series of coordinated actions on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
Under the supervision of an investigating judge in Antwerp, law enforcement conducted seven searches and arrested three individuals. Authorities also blocked several bank accounts and seized cash as part of the operation.
Details of 'Operation Steamboat'
The investigation centers on allegations that a customs official and two managers of private companies involved in customs operations collaborated on a fraudulent scheme. This alleged operation is believed to have resulted in the evasion of over €11.3 million in import duties, representing a substantial loss to the financial interests of both the European Union and Belgium.
The EPPO initiated its investigation in 2024, following a complaint lodged by Belgium's General Administration of Customs and Excise. The recent actions on January 20 mobilized a substantial force, including 48 customs and police officers. These personnel were drawn from the investigation team of Belgium's General Administration of Customs and Excise, several units of the Belgian Federal Police (including the CDBC, FCCU, and the Canine Support Unit), and received support from the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD).
EPPO's Mandate and Next Steps
The EPPO, as the independent public prosecution office of the European Union, is tasked with investigating, prosecuting, and bringing to judgment crimes against the EU's financial interests. While the investigation is ongoing, the EPPO emphasizes that all persons involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the competent Belgian courts.
The Port of Antwerp is a major gateway for international trade into the European Union, making it a critical area for customs oversight. This operation underscores the EPPO's commitment to safeguarding the EU budget from sophisticated fraud schemes.

This operation demonstrates the importance of bodies like EPPO for safeguarding EU funds. Yet, the involvement of a customs official highlights a worrying internal vulnerability that needs deeper examination.

This will barely make a dent. The system is fundamentally broken.

Took them long enough to catch these guys. What about the others?

Another example of how easily corruption thrives in big systems.
