Latvia Reaffirms 'No' to New Migrants
During the annual foreign policy debate in the Saeima on January 29th, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže explicitly stated that Latvia 'will not accept new migrants'. The declaration underscores the government's firm stance on immigration policy, particularly concerning illegal migration.
Enhanced Border Protection Measures
Minister Braže highlighted that Latvia has significantly strengthened its border protection. She noted that the border fence is complete, and commended the efforts of border guards, national guards, and other services. These personnel have been instrumental in preventing illegal crossings, with over 12,000 instrumentalized migrants reportedly stopped from reaching Latvia last year.
The country views illegal migration, particularly from the Belarusian border, as a 'hybrid threat' and a 'significant security challenge'. This perspective was echoed by Prime Minister Evika Silina during the same debate, who, while affirming Latvia's current safety, stressed vigilance against such threats.
Context of Migration Policy and Solidarity
Latvia's position is rooted in a broader national security focus, as outlined in its Integrated Border Management Plan 2024-2028. This plan prioritizes preventing irregular crossings, improving return procedures, and modernizing border infrastructure.
Regarding European Union solidarity mechanisms, Minister Braže clarified that while Latvia is prepared to share its experience and expertise with other member states, it will not accept new migrants or provide financial contributions for their reception in other countries.
Ongoing Challenges at the Border
The pressure on Latvia's borders remains substantial. Reports indicate a high number of illegal crossing attempts, particularly along the Latvian-Belarusian border. For instance, in the past year, more than 11,329 individuals were prevented from illegally crossing the border, a notable increase from 5,388 the previous year. These figures underscore the continuous efforts required to maintain border integrity and national security.

Finally, a country putting its own citizens first. Strong borders, strong nation.

It's understandable that Latvia wants to protect itself from 'hybrid threats' and secure its borders. However, there must also be a humane process for genuine asylum seekers, not just a blanket refusal that could impact vulnerable individuals.

Closing borders completely solves nothing. It just pushes the problem elsewhere.

Border security is undeniably important for any nation, and Latvia's concerns are valid. However, completely shutting out all migrants raises serious ethical questions about international obligations and humanitarian responsibilities.

Completely inhumane. Where is the compassion for people fleeing hardship?

Calling desperate people 'hybrid threats' is disgusting and dehumanizing.
