Coordinated Raids Target Criminal Network
Maltese police have successfully dismantled a significant criminal operation, arresting five Italian nationals and seizing a substantial quantity of illicit drugs and cash. The coordinated operation, which took place on Monday, January 26, 2026, targeted foreign criminal networks suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering across Malta.
The arrests involved four men and one woman, all Italian nationals aged between 27 and 35 years old. They are expected to face charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and participation in an organised crime ring.
Significant Seizures Across Multiple Locations
The operation culminated in simultaneous searches conducted at several residences located in Msida, Sliema, and Swieqi. During these raids, law enforcement officers made several key seizures:
- Approximately 13 kilograms of suspected illicit substances, including cocaine, cannabis resin, and cannabis grass. The street value of these drugs is estimated to be around €250,000.
- A substantial sum of €386,715 in cash.
- Designer clothing and jewellery with an estimated value of approximately €150,000.
- Two vehicles and a firearm, which was later confirmed to have been reported stolen.
Ongoing Investigation and Judicial Proceedings
The police operation followed weeks of intensive investigation into the activities of these foreign criminal networks operating within Malta. A magisterial inquiry has been initiated to oversee the case, led by Magistrate Monica Borg Galea, who has appointed several experts to assist with the ongoing investigation. Authorities have stated that investigations are continuing as they work to uncover further details and connections related to the criminal enterprise.

This doesn't fix the underlying issues. The system is broken.

Just a small part of a much larger problem. What about the big bosses?

While the police operation is commendable for its coordination and seizures, I question how long the impact will last. Organized crime often finds ways to replace lost assets and personnel quickly.

Focusing on 'foreign' is a distraction. Crime is crime.

The arrests are certainly a positive step in disrupting criminal networks in Malta. Yet, it's important to consider if these individuals are truly the masterminds or just cogs in a much larger international operation.
