Petrobras Sets New Production Benchmarks in 2025
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned oil and gas giant, has announced unprecedented production results for the year 2025, significantly exceeding its targets and establishing new historical annual records. The company's total annual oil production reached an average of 2.40 million barrels per day (bpd), marking an 11% increase compared to its 2024 output.
This achievement surpassed the upper limit of the target set in Petrobras' 2025-2029 Business Plan by 0.5 percentage points. The robust performance extends beyond crude oil, with total oil and natural gas production reaching 2.99 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), also an 11% increase year-on-year and 2.8 percentage points above the upper target limit. Commercial oil and natural gas production similarly saw a record high of 2.62 million boe/d, exceeding its projected target by 0.9 percentage points.
Pre-Salt Fields Drive Record Growth
A significant contributor to Petrobras' record-breaking year was the exceptional performance of its pre-salt fields. These deepwater assets set new annual records, with the company's own total pre-salt production reaching 2.45 million boe/d and operated production amounting to 3.70 million boe/d. In 2025, pre-salt volumes constituted a substantial 82% of Petrobras' overall production.
Key developments in the pre-salt region included the start-up of two new Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units in the Santos Basin: the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré in the Búzios field and the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão in the Mero field. The FPSO Almirante Tamandaré quickly became Brazil's highest-producing platform, averaging approximately 240,000 bpd in November and December. Additionally, the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias in the Mero field reached its production peak during the year.
Operational Efficiency and Strategic Investments
The company attributed its success to a combination of strategic investments and enhanced operational efficiency. The ramp-up of other FPSOs, including the Maria Quitéria in the Jubarte field, and the Anita Garibaldi and Anna Nery in the Marlim and Voador fields, further bolstered production volumes. The Búzios field, a cornerstone of Petrobras' pre-salt operations, achieved a notable milestone by reaching 1 million boe/d of operated production with the deployment of only six platforms.
The significant increase in operational efficiency across all units played a fundamental role in surpassing the ambitious production targets. Towards the end of the year, the P-78 platform also commenced operations on December 31, 2025, poised to contribute to sustained growth in the coming years.
Historical Context
These 2025 figures represent historical annual records for Petrobras, marking the highest production levels in the company's more than 70 years of operation. In comparison, Petrobras' oil production in 2024 stood at 2.2 million bpd, with total oil and natural gas production at 2.7 million boe/d, and commercial production at 2.4 million boe/d. The substantial increase in 2025 underscores the effectiveness of the company's long-term strategic planning and its focus on maximizing output from its prolific pre-salt reserves.

Increased production means more funds for public services and development, which is a clear positive for the country. But let's not forget the volatility of oil prices and the historical issues of corruption that can accompany such large-scale resource extraction.

Ignoring the future for quick profits. This isn't progress, it's regression.

More fossil fuels? This is a disaster for the climate. We need to transition, not expand!
