Yellow Alert Declared for Kurzeme
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued a yellow weather alert for a large part of Latvia's Kurzeme region, effective for Sunday, January 11th, 2026. The alert signals potential danger due to anticipated heavy snowfall across the area.
Expected Snowfall and Conditions
Forecasters predict continuous snowfall throughout Sunday, with the snow cover expected to increase by 2 to 4 centimeters in many places. Certain western areas of Kurzeme could see an accumulation of 5 to 7 centimeters of new snow. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated to affect the area extending from Cape Kolka along the Gulf of Rīga and reaching a considerable distance inland. However, the western coastline, including cities like Ventspils and Liepāja, is not included in this specific snow warning zone.
In addition to the snowfall, a slow to moderate north to northeasterly wind is expected, with gusts potentially reaching up to 15 meters per second along the Kurzeme coast. Air temperatures are forecast to range between -4°C and -9°C, with slightly warmer conditions along the Kurzeme coast.
Impact on Travel and Safety Advice
The combination of heavy snowfall and wind is expected to significantly impact travel. Visibility will deteriorate, and roads are likely to become slippery. Driving conditions are anticipated to be difficult, with the potential for snow drifts and poor visibility. Minor and regional roads may become challenging to navigate, and some remote routes could even experience complete traffic halts.
The LVĢMC advises residents and motorists to exercise extreme caution. Drivers are particularly urged to be careful if their journeys are unavoidable.
Outlook
The yellow alert underscores the need for preparedness in the affected areas of Kurzeme as winter conditions intensify. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

The alert is useful for reminding drivers to be careful, especially with the wind making conditions worse. However, I think many long-time residents are used to this level of winter weather.

Another excuse for the roads to be impassable. Fix the infrastructure!

It's important to be aware of the potential for slippery roads and reduced visibility, which the alert highlights well. But I hope this doesn't cause unnecessary disruption for what seems like a fairly typical snowfall.
