ACCIONA Energía's 50 MW Biomass Plant in Logrosan Commences Operations, Bolstering Spain's Clean Energy Grid

New Biomass Plant Powers Spanish Grid

ACCIONA Energía has officially commenced operations at its new 50 MW biomass power plant located in Logrosan, Cáceres, within Spain's Extremadura region. The facility began supplying renewable energy to the Spanish grid on December 24, 2025. This significant addition to Spain's clean energy infrastructure is projected to generate approximately 380 GWh of electricity annually.

The plant's operation marks a key step in the country's renewable energy transition, contributing to both environmental sustainability and regional economic development.

Environmental Impact and Sustainable Sourcing

The Logrosan biomass plant is set to make a substantial environmental contribution by preventing the emission of over 187,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. This reduction is comparable to removing approximately 60,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road or planting 9,000 trees annually.

The facility will consume an estimated 275,000 metric tonnes of biomass annually, primarily sourced from forestry residues, prunings, and scrubland material from the surrounding area. This systematic collection of biomass supports active forest management, which in turn helps reduce the risk and intensity of wildfires in the region by lowering combustible material loads.

Economic and Social Development

The project has delivered significant economic benefits to the local community. During its construction phase, the Logrosan plant created over 400 jobs. For its ongoing operation and maintenance, the facility will sustain around 30 direct positions.

Beyond direct employment, the plant's value chain involves more than 900 contractors and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the agroforestry and transport sectors. Notably, approximately 200 direct jobs are specifically linked to the collection of biomass, effectively acting as year-round 'forest firefighters' dedicated to land management and wildfire prevention. It is estimated that one-third of the income generated by the plant's activities will remain within the local area, fostering economic revitalization in a rural environment often affected by depopulation.

ACCIONA Energía has also initiated several programs to support socio-economic development in the region, including efforts to revitalize the Del Campo San Mateo olive oil cooperative, install a photovoltaic self-consumption system at a livestock cooperative, and provide financial assistance to biomass suppliers for machinery purchases.

Strategic Context and Advanced Technology

The Logrosan biomass plant was awarded to ACCIONA Energía through the third auction under Spain's renewable energy economic regime, overseen by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. This framework guarantees a fixed sale price for the electricity produced by the plant for a period of 20 years.

Biomass energy is recognized for its dispatchable nature, meaning it can operate continuously and respond to peak electricity demand, thereby contributing to overall grid stability. ACCIONA Energía brings over 25 years of experience in the biomass sector, utilizing advanced technologies for monitoring, digital control, predictive diagnostics, boiler optimization, and high-efficiency emissions-reduction systems to maximize energy efficiency and meet stringent environmental standards.

Utilizing forestry residues to manage fire risk is ingenious. Still, authorities must prevent any over-harvesting that could negatively impact local biodiversity and ecosystems.

The job creation and wildfire prevention benefits are clear positives for the region, but the long-term sustainability of biomass sourcing needs continuous, strict oversight.

Bringing economic revitalization to rural areas is commendable, yet the potential for localized air quality issues from burning biomass shouldn't be overlooked by residents.
