Emergency Response to Explosive Find in Lichtenvoorde
Approximately 50 homes in the Dutch town of Lichtenvoorde were evacuated on Friday, December 26, 2025, after explosive material was discovered in a residence. The incident, which occurred on Marishof street, led to the arrest of a resident and a significant deployment of emergency services, including local police, the fire department, and the Explosieven Opruimingsdienst Defensie (EOD), the Dutch military's bomb disposal unit.
Precautionary Evacuation and Temporary Shelter
The discovery prompted an immediate and extensive precautionary measure, with authorities establishing a safety perimeter around the affected area. Residents from the evacuated homes were temporarily relocated to the Oost Gelre municipal building for several hours while the situation was addressed.
EOD Secures and Detonates Material
Upon arrival, the EOD took charge of securing the hazardous material. Police spokespersons confirmed that the call regarding the potential explosive material was taken 'extremely seriously,' and the material 'appeared serious enough' to warrant the large-scale evacuation. The EOD successfully removed the explosives from the dwelling and safely detonated them outside the built-up area of Lichtenvoorde. Authorities have not disclosed the exact type or quantity of the explosive material, stating that this information would be determined through ongoing investigation.
Resident Arrested as Investigation Continues
In connection with the find, a resident of the property where the explosive material was located was arrested. The arrest was made under the Wet wapens en munitie (Weapons and Ammunition Act). After the area was declared safe following the detonation, residents were permitted to return to their homes around 7 p.m. The police are continuing their investigation into the origin of the explosive material and the involvement of the arrested individual.

The arrest is a positive step towards accountability and justice, but the larger issue of how this individual acquired such material needs a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences.
